Who leads Sedbergh Venture?

Sedbergh Venture is led by a team of about 40 volunteer leaders from churches around the country, most of whom come back year after year and so are very familiar with the site and the way that the week runs. The leaders are responsible for organising everything that happens during the week, and looking after everyone who comes. All our leaders have a DBS (formerly CRB) check, and we have a high ratio of leaders to members - typically 1:2 or even higher. Leaders come from all walks of life - some work for churches full-time, but in the past we've had nurses, teachers, engineers, accountants, and even a postman to list a few! Boys' dorms are always led by male leaders, and girls' dorms by female leaders.

The leaders are supported by a team of helpers, who look after the more practical side of the Venture - washing up, cleaning and setting up games for example. The helpers tend to be of student age, and also go through a DBS check before coming on Venture. Many are former members who love the Venture so much that they want to come back as helpers.

Overall leaders

Jonny Lee is assistant minister at a diverse and friendly church in Streatham, SW London. He's married to Katrina who loves ventures nearly as much as Jonny does. Born in Newcastle he has a heart for the North. Jonny massively enjoys the outdoors, especially rock climbing.
Tom Popplewell works for a church plant in Gateshead, in the North East. He is married to Cat who works as a doctor. Tom became involved in the Venture as a student and enjoys it so much he hasn't missed one in eleven years! His favourite activity is Go-Ape. Originally from Leeds, Tom also loves all things Northern, in particular Yorkshire Tea.
